Ready to strut ; Top designers get ready to showcase their stuff on Canada’s biggest catwalk
TOSKAN, HEATHER. The Toronto Sun; Toronto [Toronto]. 28 Mar 2010: 47.
It’s time to strut out Canada’s best designers.
All eyes will be on the runway as at least 40 fashion designers
showcase their latest fall and winter 2010 lines at LG Fashion Week
at Toronto’s Allstream Centre at Exhibition Place this week.
The Power of Style replaces the more romantically inclined themes
Wear Love and Show Love that have graced the last two seasons of
Toronto fashion week.
“We’re ready to celebrate our hard work and successful efforts to
build fashion week into an ever-growing event and respected global
entity, by taking things to the next level,” says Robin Kay, the
president of the Fashion Design Council of Canada.
Also attending the show are hundreds of fashion industry
stakeholders, including retail buyers, media and other fashion
supporters from across the country as well as Germany, U.S., Asia
and England, says Megan Loach, FDCC’s communications director.
A growing demand for seats will be accommodated by the 4,000
tickets that are available for sale to the general public, doubling
the number of consumer tickets sold at previous fashion weeks,
according to Loach.
“Fashion week is always an exciting time. It’s where I get to
showcase my new collection to the world. It takes tons of planning
and involves guring out models, fitting the clothes to the models,
choosing accessories and music and organizing it all into a show
that’s cohesive and true to one’s branding,” says Brandon R. Dwyer
who will be launching his new Basch by Brandon collection.
It’s also a launching pad for both well and lesser known designers.
The works of four recent graduates from Ryerson University’s School
of Fashion will be showcased.
“Our fashion show will take an edgy approach,” says Robert Ott,
chair of Ryerson University’s School of Fashion.
Jennifer Allison is one of the recent graduates who is thrilled to
be showing her Walking Tall collection.
“As a young Canadian designer, showcasing my work … allows me to
expose my work to the Canadian fashion industry in a way that would
otherwise not be possible, due to financial restrictions,” says
Allison.
Well-established designers such as Toronto’s Pat McDonagh, David
Dixon, Pink Tartan and Bustle, as well as Montreal’s Andy e-Anh are
among the many others who are looking forward to showing their
latest designs.
“Although preparing for fashion week is a lot of work, I love
showing as it allows me to tell a story and to present my own vision
of my collection before it’s sold,” says The Anh.
The work of 20 designers modeled by 20 Canadian celebrities will
come together for a good cause in the blockbuster Heart Truth Show
that takes place on Wednesday.
